5 REASONS TO INVEST IN A GOOD BRA
The humble bra is another victim of this wretched virus.
We’ve all read the memes and had a laugh about the new world order where boobs live free - maaaaybe that’s ok if you carry around a lightweight, perky pair resembling pancakes. For the rest of us, the girls need support!
1) A GOOD SPORTS BRA WILL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE MOVEMENT
On average a woman’s boobs move 15cm with every step when running.
Let’s break that down.... If a D Cup woman runs 1km taking 1000 steps, her boobs will have also travelled 150 meters - ouch!! Do a marathon and the girls have bounced 4.2km. Support isn’t just for the runners:
- Skin has been shown to stretch as much as 39% doing yoga where boobs are exposed to strong gravitational force.
- Although water provides natural buoyancy, a study in the Journal of Sports Sciences shows breasts still move when swimming because, as a woman's arms move through the water, it creates turbulence and pushes them sideways.
2) BE KIND TO YOUR FUTURE SELF
Someday natural boobs are all going to sag - hello gravity. And you know what? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Breasts can stretch up to 15cm in old age, with gravity starting to pull in your 30s when the nipple drops 1-2cm.
If sagging, or the prospect of sagging, is weighing you down, then good support can help ward off long term effects of gravity - particularly when you’re physically active.
3) GOOD SUPPORT PROVIDES THE SELF CONFIDENCE TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THINGS YOU LOVE
Do the words nipples and duct tape make you cringe? Yep, me too…
It was the morning of my year 8 athletics carnival, I clumsily hooked my flimsy bra, pulled on my white polo and hideous red scungies before running out of my bedroom, down the stairs, ready to leave for school.
Whoaaaa, not so fast... The slightly annoying, sometimes embarrassing buds that had popped from my chest seemed to have turned into full blown, woman bosoms overnight and they were bouncing outrageously.
My bra was never going to cut it on a day where I'd be racing as fast as I could in front of 600 of the world's harshest critics - teenage girls, I'm looking at you. I retreated back to my bedroom to hatch a plan... duct tape!
It didn't turn out well - bleeding nipples, a rash and still not enough support. I pulled a sickie and never competitively ran again.
My story isn’t unique (well perhaps the duct tape part is): 46% of girls drop out of sport by age 17 with body image and self confidence a major barrier to participation.
3) COMFORT IS QUEEN
Ever had sore boobs after exercising? Rubbing and riding? How about chafing (we’ve already talked enough about bleeding nipples for one blog so let’s just leave it at that)?
Keep abreast of what to look out for to give yourself the best shot at comfort:
✔️ Choose bras with high support elements such as moulded cups, wide straps and multiple options for back adjustment.
✔️ The band should be made of wide elastic so it can support without causing bulges, chafing or riding up.
✔️ Wide shoulder straps will help prevent them digging into your shoulders.
✔️ Cups should completely cover your boobs.
✔️ know your over bust and under bust measurements to help determine appropriate sizing.
✔️Replace your faves about once a year. Boob pain after exercise could be because your bra is past its used by date.
5) SUPPORT YOURSELF INTO GOOD HEALTH
A recent UK study showed nearly one-in-five women say their boobs stood in the way of them keeping fit!
Another study published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that women with very large breasts can lose five years off their life expectancy because of the impact it has on their motivation to exercise.
5 FRIKKEN YEARS!!!
Invest in a good bra, jump on in to the things you love and live longer. Simple.
